The Ash and the Blade

The boy’s name was Caelen. He was born with a wooden sword in his hands—or so his mother always said. In truth, he carved it himself when he was six, sitting by the hearth in the village of Rensfall, nestled in the green belly of the Kingdom of Alrennor. Caelen trained every day in the fields. He fought shadows, fence posts, and the wind. He dreamed of oaths sworn beneath banners, of steel polished to a mirror's shine, of saving queens from dragons—though there were no dragons left, and no queens in Rensfall. Still, he knew. He would be a Knight of the Crown. Alrennor was a kingdom of order. The king, Aedric the Evenhanded, ruled from the gleaming city of Eldhollow. Knights patrolled the roads, silver-cloaked and righteous. And every ten years, the Crown summoned boys of fifteen to present themselves at Eldhollow’s gates for the Trials of the Blade. Caelen never made it. The year he turned thirteen, smoke rose over the mountains. I. The Fall The war came without warning. No heral...

THE EMPEROR OF ASHES

THE EMPEROR OF ASHES By the time Silas reached the Obsidian Citadel, the war was already over. Kael Bloodhand sat upon a throne of melted crowns; his armor forged from the husks of fallen gods. He’d conquered the Sun Steppes with sand dragons, shattered the Sky Monasteries with gravity-witches, and poisoned the Whisperwood’s heart-tree with a single drop of his own black blood. No hero could touch him. Swords shattered against his skin. Spells unraveled at his breath. Prophecies died in the throats of seers. Silas—a librarian from a burnt city—knelt in the throne room, clutching not a weapon, but a clay teapot. Kael’s generals laughed, their teeth filed to points. “Another fool bearing gifts?” Kael’s voice was stones grinding in a grave. “Not a gift,” Silas said, pouring steaming jasmine into a cracked cup. “A surrender.” He offered the cup. No poison (Kael was immune). No trick (his mages scanned it). Just tea, steeped in water from the last free spring. Kael drank. And froze. Silas w...

Whispers of the Last Ember - Short Story

Whispers of the Last Ember The ancient forest of Eldwyn never slept. Beneath the thick canopy of twisting branches, shadows moved with secrets older than the stars. This was a place where light dared not linger, where the very air hummed with forgotten magic, waiting for a spark to ignite it once more. Amara stepped quietly through the moss-carpeted floor, her boots barely disturbing the silence. She was the last Emberborn — a rare lineage gifted with the fire of creation, a power long thought lost. Her raven-black hair tangled with leaves, and her eyes burned with a fierce determination, fierce enough to challenge the shadows. She carried a small, glowing ember sealed inside an obsidian amulet, the last flicker of the Great Flame, snuffed out centuries ago when the Dark King fell. The stories said that if the ember reignited, it could restore balance to a world teetering on the edge of decay. But danger prowled close behind. The Dark King’s shadow lingered still, twisting men’s he...
